Both the A340 and the A330 are loosely based upon the design of the A300. Both aircraft are built to a common design with wings swept to 30 degrees and with 9 ft (2.74 m) winglets, the difference being that the A330 is powered by two engines and the A340 by four. The A340 first flew on 25 October 1991 and the first delivery was to Lufthansa on 2 February 1993. The first delivery of an A330 was to Air Inter on 17 January 1994. The A330 was the first Airbus design to be offered with engines from all three major manufacturers - General Electric, Pratt & Whitney and Roll-Royce.

The initial production version of the A330 was designated -300. It flies with a crew of two and can accommodate up to 440 passengers to a range of 6,329 miles at Mach 0.86. In 1997 the -200 series was introduced with a longer range but shorter fuselage. The A340-300 can carry up to 440 passengers to a range of 7,710 miles, but there are four other variants offering differing performance options.
